Guilin City

Guilin is most famoust for its scenic beauty. There are many scenic places within short traveling distance of Guilin. These include Longsheng with its famous Longji rice terraces; the Lijiang River, a scene of which is printed on the back of ¥20 bank notes; Yangshuo, a small county downstream from Guilin; and much more. This makes Guilin an excellent base for exploring the northern end of Guangxi Province.

Guilin is also a beautiful city. The town center is surrounded by two rivers, four lakes and beautiful mountains.

The Li River originates in Mountain Mao'er, northeast of Guilin, and winds its way southeast passing through Guilin and Yangshuo, finally meeting the Xi River in Wulin. It boasts the largest and most beautiful scenic area in China and attracts thousands of visitors. The 83-km-long waterway from Guilin to Yangshuo is the masterpiece of Li River, decorated with rolling hills, steep cliffs, fantastic caves, leisurely boats and lined bamboos. A poem says: "The river is a green silk ribbon, and the hills are jade hair-pins."

Some of the other highlights are Elephant Trunk Hill and its Moon-over-Water Cave with over 70 inscriptions from the Tang and Song dynasties praising the beauty of hills and waters nearby.
Fubo Hill, near the Li River. A tale has it that Ma Yuan, called General Fubo, of the Han Dynasty had once passed by Guilin on a southern expedition. He poured all the pearls he carried into the river, so the hill was named after him in his memory.

Reed Flute Cave, Located 5 kms northwest of Guilin, is in fact a cave on the southern shoulder of the Guangming Hill (Bright Hill). It Got its name from the reeds used for making flutes and pipes growing at its entrance.
